On a recent visit to friend and fellow recovering addict Tim*, I was presented with the opportunity to give you all a peak inside the pockets of someone who sells prescription pills. This was an opportunity I of course could not turn down.
When I entered Tim's apartment, I spotted his good friend Mike*, a nice older man, sitting in the lazy boy situated in the far corner of the room. I had met Mike many times before, but he is not someone I'm very familiar with, or have ever seen outside of Tim's apartment.
At one point during my visit, I overheard Tim ask Mike if he could buy a few pills before he left. I wasn't aware Mike even sold pills regularly until that moment, but thought I would take the chance and ask to snap a few quick photos of whatever he had for sale. All I had was my cell phone camera, but this was an opportunity I did not want to let slip away.
He hesitated at first, not sure what to think of my unusual request. After a brief explanation, Mike decided that he would allow me to take photos, but only under certain conditions. Those conditions were of course that I was only to take photos of the pills. None of Mike, none of Tim, or anything else that could be identifying in the least. I of course obliged.
Unsure of exactly what or how much he had, I pulled out my cell phone and followed them into the kitchen. Mike began emptying out his pockets onto the kitchen counter for me to snap some photos of his supply. He certainly did not disappoint! Mike was a walking pharmacy - no prescription required. Pills galore.
He had quite the selection as well! At that given moment, he had on his person:
10+ Percocet 5mg
25+ Oxycontin 20mg
10+ Oxycontin 60mg
15+ Morphine 60mg
4 Hydromorphone 12mg
15+ Hydromorphone 18mg
1 Hydromorphone 24mg
100+ Dilaudid 8mg
Along with many others inside the pill bottle, although I did not have the opportunity to see what pills or how many were inside.
Mike is certainly is not a unique case, and nor he considered a big dealer. While he admits to struggling with alcohol in the past, he does not use pills himself, and only sells here and there to friends for extra income. Just a regular older man who is financially stable, and certainly does not fit the stereotypical look of a 'drug dealer' or 'pill head'.
Yet inside his pockets you'll find a mountain of pills. Addiction, whether it be to drugs or alcohol, does not discriminate.
