For years I have been familiar with the use of eCigs. Whether it be for novelty or the purpose of quitting smoking, these nifty little devices have peeked my interest from the beginning. However due to lack of funds, high prices, minimal access and lack of information at the time; I decided vaping wasn't for me. I was of course still very curious about them, but given the barriers, I put it on the back burner and moved on. But everything changed last night when I pulled that pot back to the front, and cranked the burner up to high...
How exactly, did I end up puffing on vaporized Nicotine infused eJuice, through some sort of futuristic looking contraption with a mouthpiece?
It all started during one of my daily chats with my amazing and always feisty 79 year old Grama. Grama mentioned a recent conversation with a woman regarding (you guessed it...) an eCig. She discussed various different points about them, but what stood out to me was the price and accessiblity. It seemed as though it was no longer internet only purchases and high prices I had remembered from years ago. The woman explained to my Grama that her eCig had cost $40CAD, and refill vials of eJuice under $10.
Impressed and intriguied, I began to do some searching for local brick and mortar stores that sold eCigs. After some digging, I came upon a popular 'starter model' for the low price of $19.99. The store wasn't exactly close, but still given the fact that I was struggling to get rid of a nasty 'bout of Bronchitis, and a price I couldn't complain about, I figured I shouldn't exactly be making any more excuses.
So I headed out, ready to start my journey into the world of eCigs and Vaping...
On my way, I figured there was no harm in stopping into a nearby head shop, located on the opposite corner of the intersection where the bus stops. I wandered in, and to my surprise, the man at the counter confirmed that he indeed had 'many' eCigs to choose from. I quickly spotted the price tags; they were all more than I was willing to spend, but I figured I would play along. With some searching, I managed to locate the model I had intended on purchasing from the store across town, asked him if I could see it and inquired as to the price. When he told me the price of $40, I recoiled, and explained that was far too much. He started into a spiel about how quality products cost more, and his products are of course top quality. I wasn't willing to spend $40 on a model I knew I could get for half price.
I let him in on the $20 price elsewhere, and he suddenly changed his tune; dropping prices left and right. After some haggling and discussion, I settled upon a different model than the one I had originally set out to purchase. For $30 cash, no tax, I had myself an eCig, and was well on my way to vaping!
Next up, eJuice, or eLiquid.
He led me over to the opposite counter, and pointed towards the glass display case that contained the tiny vials of eJuice. I browsed them quickly, but only noticed varieties of fruit or candy flavours, none of which seemed to actually contain Nicotine. This might be a problem. I inquired with the man as to whether he had any eJuice containing Nicotine, and that was "Tobacco" flavoured, not cotton candy or bubble gum. I'm a smoker looking to quit a nasty habit, not a teenager trying to look cool. He pointed to one lone vial of eJuice, the only one containing actual Nicotine in the entire store, with a price tag of $19.99. I told him thank you, and headed on my way.
Next stop, head shops further downtown. I jumped on the express bus and 'headed' up the main street to my destination.
First three shops were all busts, with the stores only carrying 'flavoured varieties' or nothing at all. Discouraged, I headed into the next shop and explained to the salesperson what I was looking for with great detail. To my surprise, he said he did carry some. It was more expensive than I was hoping at $12, but I was shopped out and itching to start vaping. Hesitantly, I forked it over, silently cursing the price and then headed out the door and back to the bus stop.
After a short bus ride home and a bite to eat, I was finally officially ready to fire this eCig up! So which model and style of eCig did I end up purchasing as my starter?

After some fiddling and experimenting, I must say, I am quite impressed with my eCig!
But how effective has it been in curbing cravings for cigarrettes? Could this really be an effective option when it comes to smoking or tobacco harm reduction?
I am not a Doctor, nor do I claim to offer any sort of medical/health advice or recommendations on whether or not eCigs are the right option for you. I am simply going to offer up a series of blog posts detailing my own personal journey and experiences in quitting smoking through eCigs. I am not condoning or advocating their use.
Having said that, after only a day of use, I honestly feel like this might be the thing I need to enable me to quit smoking cigarettes. Sure, maybe I'm getting ahead of myself, but a little determination and positivity never hurt anyone, amirite?!
The first night I fired the eCig up around 8p.m., and only had 2 cigarettes throughout the course of the night until approximately 1a.m. when I went to bed (I could easily have 5-6 normally in that time period). Throughout today, my first full day with the eCig, I have determined that 11mg of Nicotine isn't quit going to cut it to start. I have found the liquid is going at a quicker rate than I would hope, and I have to take too many hauls in order to achieve craving satisfaction. This weekend I will be purchasing eJuice with a stronger concentration of Nicotine, at least 18mg, which should hopefully enable me to achieve craving satisfaction without having to take so many hauls!
But for my impending eJuice purchase, I will be making the trip out to a little store in the east end I've gotten word of that is apparently "the place" for all things eCig here in town. I will of course keep you informed of my journey, my thoughts and experiences with the stronger concentration of eJuice and vaping as a whole.
